If you want to install Gnome Desktop on Ubuntu 18.04 Server then the easiest way is to use the tasksel tool to install the Ubuntu Desktop.

Before starting the installation of the tasksel tool we need to update and upgrade the server.

To run the update/upgrade process, log into your server and execute the following two commands:

sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get upgrade -y

Tasksel Installation

Tasksel is a Debian/Ubuntu tool that installs multiple related packages as a co-ordinated “task” onto your system.

In order to install tasksel execute the following command:

sudo apt-get install tasksel -y

Once the installation is completed execute the below command to open the tasksel menu:

sudo tasksel

After the above command new pop-up menu will open see in figure (a):

Navigate pointer to Ubuntu desktop and select by using spacebar then save by entering on Ok.

Once this process will complete reboot the system so, you will be able to login to a normal Ubuntu Desktop.
